Escudilla National Recreation Trail

We trailered horses to the Escudilla trailhead this past June and were rewarded with beautiful views and just a great ride, one of the best rides we have been on in the last year.

The 6 mile round trip Escudilla trail takes you through some areas damaged by the Wallow and earlier fires, yet as with other areas affected by the Wallow fire, there remains much beauty as you pass through spruce, fir and aspen trees during the climb to the top. The last part of the trail is very rocky but still passable by horse or foot and the trail ends at the old burned out fire lookout tower where you are met with a beautiful view of the valley below and hills beyond.

Directions: Drive 5.5 miles north from Alpine on US 191 to Forest Road 8056. Turn right on Forest Road 56 and follow it 3.6 miles to Terry Flat. Take the left fork past Tool Box Draw 0.5 miles to the trailhead (#308).
